01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Located a short walk from the bustle around Senso-ji temple and Kaminarimon gate, Tokiwa Shokudō welcomes diners with an unpretentious canteen menu. Closed on Wednesdays, the restaurant stays open continuously from morning through the evening on business days, providing a reassuring table for local life whether stopping in for breakfast before sightseeing, sitting down for a hearty lunch, or winding down over an evening meal after work.

Plentiful fish and meat set meals

Fish dishes form the core of the extensive teishoku roster. Thickly sliced tuna sashimi sets, aromatic salted grilled mackerel, sweet-and-savoury simmered mackerel in miso, and substantial salted grilled herring let guests choose from the sea's bounty to match their mood. The meat selections are just as substantial, featuring reliable canteen staples like pork cutlet teishoku (tonkatsu), katsudon rice bowls, ginger pork, and "tonzara"—thinly sliced pork seasoned in a comforting sukiyaki style.

Small plates and warming soups

Another great pleasure here is the freedom to combine small side plates. Options include aubergine coated in sweet blended miso, tofu steak dressed with house-made soy sauce, spinach in sesame dressing, and freshly fried horse mackerel, all available at accessible prices. Diners can graze on squid liver or pork fried with miso (abura miso) over drinks, or build their own spread around rice and a bowl of ingredient-packed tonjiru or red-miso nameko mushroom soup.

The calm, approachable interior makes it easy to take a seat on your own, serving as both a dependable everyday eatery and a welcoming pit stop during walks through Asakusa.
